The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

The EUDR is an EU regulation that aims to reduce deforestation and forest degradation worldwide. It regulates the import and export of certain raw materials and products that often cause deforestation during their production and thus damage ecosystems.

When the EUDR comes into force, companies in the printing and paper industry will face practical operational problems in its implementation.

The biggest challenge here is to document the reference and verification numbers (GDR/DDV) consistently and comprehensibly in the context of due diligence declarations (DDS) and to pass them on within the supply chains.

If a company wants to meet the requirements of the regulation, a high level of manual effort is required, especially for smaller order volumes. In addition, the potential for errors increases enormously without automation.

EUDR-X exchange format

With the new EUDR-X standard, the Initiative Online Print (IOP) is providing an open, cross-industry standard that enables the machine-readable transfer of EUDR data along the entire supply chain.

Standard data syntax for interoperability

EUDR-X defines uniform, structural semantics that can be seamlessly integrated into existing digital processes such as e-delivery bills or e-invoices. The standard therefore acts as a modular building block to supplement existing systems – in the spirit of interoperable, efficient and scalable data communication.

Supported formats

  • JSON (recommended): completely schema-validated, modern and machine-readable
  • XML (optional): compatible with older ERP systems, uses XSD/DTD for validation
  • CSV (not recommended):

only for simple use cases, as no nested structures are possible

Industry-wide collaboration and future viability

The new EUDR-X data exchange format was developed as part of the ESG working group of the Initiative Online Print (IOP). The development was driven forward jointly by our members, software providers, print service providers and suppliers – an example of the high level of network competence, industry expertise and good cooperation within the IOP.

“Only through intelligent digitalization along the entire value chain can we achieve efficiency and sustainability at the same time,” says Dominik Haacke, member of the IOP’s ESG working group and project manager for EUDR-X.

The EUDR-X standard can now be viewed and accessed on GitHub.

The advantages

With the new exchange format, the IOP has created an offer from practical experience for practical use, which is particularly helpful for companies in the printing industry:

  • Standardized data formats for the transfer of reference and verification numbers (DDR and DDV)
  • Automated machine readability and interface optimization
  • Reduction of manual process costs for print-on-demand, mass customization and self-publishing
  • Support for all parties involved, such as software manufacturers, print service providers, upstream and downstream players in the supply chain
